Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 22, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Unmute ("we", "our", "us") handles information when you use the Unmute mobile application. Unmute is designed to keep journal content on-device, but the app also uses third-party services for rewarded ads, app tracking transparency prompts on iOS, and in-app purchases or subscriptions.

1. Journal Content Stored on Your Device

Your journal content stays primarily on your device. Your deeply personal inputs, such as selected emotion colors, text journal entries, audio recordings, and photos, are intended to be stored locally on your phone or tablet for core journaling functionality.

  • No First-Party Cloud Journal Sync: We do not operate a cloud journaling backend that stores your diary content for syncing across devices.
  • User Control: You control your local content. If you delete entries or remove the app from your device, locally stored journal content may be permanently removed unless you have your own device backup.
  • Important Limitation: This local-storage model does not mean that the app never sends any data off-device. Separate data flows may occur for ads, app permissions, billing, fraud prevention, and platform compliance as described below.

2. Data Processed for Core App Features

Depending on how you use Unmute, the app may process the following information for core product functionality:

  • Mood selections, emotional colors, and text notes.
  • Media attachments you add (such as images, photos, and audio recordings).
  • Profile information you provide within the app.

3. Health-Related and Wellness Data

Because Unmute is a mood and emotional wellness journaling app, some information you create in the app may be considered health-related or sensitive personal data. This may include mood check-ins, emotional state selections, mental wellness reflections, journal text, audio notes, photos, and summaries that describe your psychological, emotional, or wellbeing status.

  • What health-related data the app handles: mood entries, emotional labels, wellness reflections, text journals, attached photos, attached audio notes, and derived summaries or timelines based on those entries.
  • How we use it: to let you create entries, review your history, generate summaries, visualize emotional trends, and support reminders, exports, and other journaling features inside the app.
  • How we share it: we do not sell your health-related journal content, we do not use it for ad targeting, and we do not disclose that content to advertising or billing providers as part of normal app operation. It remains on your device unless you explicitly export it, share it, or send it to us for support.

4. Rewarded Ads and Advertising Data

Unmute may show rewarded ads only when you actively choose to watch one. Rewarded ads may be served through Google AdMob or similar advertising providers integrated into the app.

When a rewarded ad is requested, displayed, measured, or completed, third-party ad providers may receive or process limited data such as device and app identifiers, advertising identifiers (such as IDFA or Android Advertising ID where available), IP address, coarse location inferred from IP, app version, device model, operating system, language, and ad interaction events.

We do not use your journal entries, mood notes, health-related reflections, attached photos, or audio recordings as ad creative input or sell that content to advertisers. Ad SDKs are intended to receive device-level and usage-level signals needed to deliver, measure, personalize where permitted, and secure advertising, not the contents of your private wellness journal.

5. App Tracking Transparency on iOS

On iOS, Unmute may present Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt before allowing tracking-related advertising activities that require that permission. If you deny tracking permission, we are expected to respect that choice and not access the IDFA for tracking purposes.

Declining ATT permission should not prevent you from using the core journaling experience. It may reduce or limit personalized advertising, ad measurement, or related campaign attribution features available through ad providers.

6. In-App Purchases, Subscriptions, and Store Billing

If you purchase a subscription or other paid feature, billing is handled by Apple through the App Store / StoreKit or by Google through Google Play Billing. We do not receive or store your full payment card number.

The relevant store provider may process transaction records, purchase status, subscription status, product identifiers, order identifiers, receipts, storefront or country information, and fraud-prevention signals. We may receive confirmation data needed to unlock, restore, validate, or manage purchases and subscriptions inside the app.

7. Technical, Diagnostic, and Security Information

To keep the app reliable, secure, and compatible, Unmute and its integrated service providers may process limited technical or diagnostic information such as crash details, device model, operating system version, app version, language, timestamps, and anti-fraud or abuse-prevention signals. This information is not intended to include the contents of your private journal entries unless you explicitly send that information to us for support.

8. How We Use Information

  • To provide app features such as journaling, timeline views, reminders, and sharing features.
  • To store your local entries and settings on your device.
  • To request, deliver, measure, secure, and reward optional rewarded ads.
  • To request and respect advertising or tracking permissions where required by platform rules.
  • To validate, restore, manage, and support in-app purchases and subscriptions.
  • To improve app stability, compatibility, fraud prevention, and support operations.
  • To respond to your direct support requests via email.

9. Device Permissions

Unmute may request specific device permissions to function properly. All data accessed via these permissions stays on your device:

  • Photos/Files: To allow you to attach and display images in your daily entries.
  • Microphone: To allow you to record and playback audio notes.

On supported iOS versions, we may also request ATT permission for tracking-related advertising. You can manage, grant, or revoke permissions at any time from your device settings.

10. Sharing and External Transfers

If you choose to use our sharing features (such as exporting a weekly or monthly emotional summary), the selected content is generated on your device and exported through the external apps or social media services you purposefully choose to share it to. Please review the privacy policies of those third-party services, as we do not control them.

In addition, limited data may be transferred off-device to third-party providers involved in advertising, attribution, store billing, fraud prevention, or technical operations. These providers may include Google, Apple, and other vendors that support the app's monetization and distribution flows.

11. Data Retention and Deletion

Your journal entries and other locally stored content remain on your device until you delete them, uninstall the app, or erase your device storage or backup.

Advertising, billing, transaction, anti-fraud, and platform-level data processed by Google, Apple, or other third-party providers may be retained by those providers under their own retention schedules and legal obligations. Subscription and purchase management is handled through your App Store or Google Play account settings.

Where available, you can reset or limit advertising identifiers from your device settings, revoke ATT permission on iOS, and submit support questions about privacy to us using the contact information below.

12. Data Security

We rely on your device's built-in security features, encrypted transport where supported by our service providers, and platform safeguards such as iOS/Android sandbox protections to protect data handled by the app and its integrated services. We still recommend using a device passcode or biometrics and keeping your operating system up to date.

13. Third-Party Services

Depending on platform and feature usage, Unmute may rely on third-party services such as Google AdMob, Apple App Tracking Transparency, Apple App Store / StoreKit, and Google Play Billing. Those services may process data under their own privacy terms in addition to this policy.

14. Children's Privacy

Unmute is not directed to children under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided personal data to us via a support channel, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

15. Your Rights and Controls

You can access, correct, export, or delete the journal content stored on your device by using the app and your device controls. You can also manage subscriptions through Apple or Google, manage ATT permission on iOS, and manage ad privacy settings or advertising identifiers where your platform makes those controls available.

For any region-specific privacy rights requests that relate to support interactions or other first-party records we may hold, you may contact us directly.

16. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted with a revised "Last updated" date inside the app and on our website.
